Land Rover ACE Removal (Deletion)

Some models of the Land Rover Discovery 2, (and some versions of Range Rover) are fitted with ACE. This is an Active Cornering Enhancement system. When it fails, (often due to old age and corrosion), the system can be expensive to replace. However, parts are available, that allow you to remove the ACE system (and convert back to a ‘non’ ACE system). This article covers the removal and replacement and shows you what parts are needed.

This involves the removal of:

  • The ACE anti-roll bars.
  • Hydraulic rams (attached to the roll bars).
  • The hydraulic pump.
  • and some ancillary items.

Topics:

Notes:

  • This article covers the Land Rover Discovery 2.
  • The system is fitted to some Range Rover models.

The ACE Pump:

The pump can be easily removed from the vehicle, as it’s only held in place with three bolts. There are two hydraulic pipe connections, (inlet and outlet) that will need to be disconnected. Before removing the pump, the drive belt needs to be removed, (and replaced with a different sized belt).

Topics:

Pump removal from the Td5 Engine:

  • The ACE hydraulic pump will need to be replaced with a ‘Bracket-idler mounting ancillary drive’ (an idler pulley wheel).
  • Also required are three mounting bolts for the idler pulley wheel, as the bolts used to mount the ACE hydraulic pump are way too long for the replacement idler pulley wheel.
  • A new shorter Drive Belt will also be required. The size of the drive belt is dependant on the ancillaries fitted\removed from your vehicle (air conditioning, ACE). These ancillaries will dictate the length of drive belt that will be need to be fitted, (see the table below).

Pump removal from the V8 Engine:

  • A new shorter Drive Belt will be required. The size of the drive belt is dependant on the ancillaries fitted\removed from your vehicle (air conditioning, ACE). These ancillaries will dictate the length of drive belt that will be need to be fitted, (see the table below).
  • An additional idler pulley wheel is not required unless you’re deleting, or adding air conditioning (see the table below).

ACE Pump Removal – Additional Bolts Required (Td5 only):

On the Td5, when you remove the ACE pump, you have to fit an idler wheel. This requires 3 new bolts, as the original pump bolts are too long…

M8 1.25 8.8 50 mm 25 mm x 3 An idler pulley wheel & bracket that replaces the ACE pump (TD5 only). See notes 1 & 2 below
1 The original ACE pump bolts have an M8 thread but an M6 bolt head. This indicates that an M6 torque should be used, (probably due to a steel bolt screwing into an aluminium housing).
2 It’s probably advisable to use a thread lock.

ACE Pump Removal – The Idler Pulley Wheel & Bracket Torque Values (Td5 only):

You can look up the torque values for a particular size and grade of bolt. However, the values are often shown for screwing the bolt into steel. The ‘Bracket-idler mounting ancillary drive’ (an idler pulley wheel), screws into an aluminium housing. Therefore, a lower torque value for screwing into aluminium is required…

Note:

  • The original ACE pump bolts have a M8 thread but an M6 bolt head. This may indicate that an M6 torque should be used, (probably due to a steel bolt screwing into an aluminium housing).

2 The steel bolt are screwed into an aluminium housing. Start at 25Nm and gradually increase the torque to 40Nm, feeling as you go.
3 It’s probably advisable to use a thread lock.

Anti Roll Bars:

The anti roll bars on vehicles fitted with ACE (Active Cornering Enhancement), have to be replaced with non-ACE anti roll bars, when parts of the ACE system are removed or disabled. The original front and rear ACE anti roll bars will not perform correctly when an ACE system is disabled, as the hydraulic actuator arms will no longer Work.

Note:

Unfortunately, I have seen a few articles which appear to suggest that just removing the ACE pump is all you need to disable the system. This is incorrect…

Ordering Parts:

If you’re not sure what parts you need, sometimes it’s a good idea to have to look at what’s available? The tables below may give you an idea of what you can get, what they look like and how much they cost…
